One thing that astonished me when I read the Lord of the Rings series by Mr.
Tolkien was the bewildering number of words for a valley. When languages
specify, you can see what is important to the speakers of the language. What
on earth are all those words for valley? From where do they come? What the
heck is the difference between a dingle, a glen, a vale, and others? Do
given names like Dean and Glen come from them?
