Re Martinmas
Tom Byro remembers a "song "Suennermarten, gaue Marten...." and wants to
know whether that has anything to do with Martinsmass..."

Somehow that resonates with a memory I have that I cannot place. When I was
5 years old, I was sent to a "Gezondheids kolonie" ( Kurort for kids ) in
Katwijk aan Zee. I think it was about this time of the year.
There was some kind of festivity and the local kids went around the village
with a "foekepot" ( a glas jar with a pork bladder over the top, trough
which was poked the handle of a wooden spoon. When you moved the spoon up
and down it made a noise. People gave us candy or invited us in for
pancakes. There was a song that belonged to it. "Rommelpotterij,
rommelpotterij, Geef me een centje dan ga ik weer voorbij was the refrain.
