Beste Ron:

Onderwerp: Names

Psss... Mark, dis maar gou gefluister tussen ons: die naam is "Helge", met
'n "e" aan die einde, en dis 'n man se naam, die ekwiwalent van Helga, wat
'n vroumens se naam is.

Dankie vir die regwys, asook die mildelike en interessante wyse wat u dit
oorgedra het.

Ek bloos my pers

Die Uwe,
Mark

My Dear Helge:

Subject: LL-L "Anthems"

A thousand apologies for misspelling your name, thereby leading Ron to
believe I mistook you for a member of the gentler sex. But it was finger
trouble, & I was in no doubt about your status, for personal reasons. Once,
in our Old Army, a fellow by the name of Helge Anderson signed on Section 11
(Our non-citizen executive forces contract) as a mercenary. He opened
contact with me, actually, because he thought I, as a Dreyer, was the same,
from the same part of the World.

You surely won't find much of what he wrote me by way of correction too hard
to follow, & it is philologically most interesting besides. Even when Our
Ron administers 'stropsuiker' the emphesis is on the 'suiker'.

Yrs,
Mark

Uh-oh! This smells rather ominous under all that sugar. "Philologically
most interesting" sounds supiciously like "linguistically butchered" ...
;-)

> as a Dreyer, was the same, from the same part of the World

Yeah, same as "Turner," in Low Saxon _drayer_ (<Dreiher>), from _drayen_
(<dreihn>) 'to turn'. The noun _dray_ (<Dreih>), literally "turn," can also
mean 'technique', 'trick', 'slight of hand' and the like.

Example:

Hey het d'n dray ruut.
<He hett den Dreih rut.>
[HEI hEt=n dra:\I "ru:t]
("He has the turn out [= down = mastered].")
He has mastered the trick.
He's got it figured out.
He has it down.
He's got(ten) the hang of it.

Groete,
Reinhard/Ron
