Happy Fall/Spring Everyone!
Well, to be a little more precise - yes, to non-Americans, all Americans are
Yankees.
To Americans, those North of the Mason Dixon Line are Yankees.
To those North of the M/D Line, New Englanders are Yankees.
To many New Englanders, only people who live in New Hampshire, Vermont or
Maine are Yankees and in those states, to many people, only those living in
the "sticks" are Yankees - then there's the whole Swamp Yankee thing, but
don't get me started :-)

Hi all,

Kevin Caldwell writes: To non-Americans, all Americans are Yankees (or
Yanks), [snip]

I think one has to avoid blanket generalizations. Let's say: Most
half-informed
people outside the US call 'Americans Yankees'. The uninformed do not even
know what a Yankee is, and the ignorant has never heard of the Mason-Dixie
line!

As far as I know -- unless things have changed in recent years -- "Yank" is
the usual casual Australian (not necessarily full-blown "Ocker") name for
"American." It is not necessarily disparaging. Most Australians would
consider "Yankee" a separate, specific name, closer to the original American
usage.
