Dear All:

Subject: LL-L Grammar.

> "Om het af te leren" is also used in Dutch as a sort of excuse to have
> one more drink.

"Om iets af te leer." is frequently used in Afrikaans, in any serious sense
to 'disinculcate'. It is applied to children who 'grow out of' a bad or
childish habit, & to adults who under the spur of 'snot en trane, sielstryd
en ellende' manage to break one.

As for _'n regmakertjie_ (little right-maker), in Afrikaans, ja wel, en
gesondheid, maar ek sou dit as (little fixer-upper) vertaal.
so also 'Een vir die pad!' (one for the road).
''n Afskeidjie!' (a little farewell)
& for the shootin' fraternity ''n inskerper!' (a group-tightener) actually
guaranteed to wreck your aim, but at the same time relieve you of any
distress about it. This last is seldom used at a party, but on the hunt or
shooting range, in mockery of a self-indulgently bad shot, or shooter.

Yrs,
Mark
