My dad liked to quote this saying when my sister and I were standing in
front of the mirror with mascara.

Al dra 'n aap 'n goue ring,
hy bly nog steeds 'n lelike ding.

Now what kind of a thing is that to say to one's lovely daughters?  I
guess it's that "plain" Calvinist thing aimed at eradicating vanity.
