Heather, Gabriele, Piet et al

My, ageing, Shorter OED dates "dope" from 1880 "US, (- Dutch doop=sauce, f
doopen=dip, mix, adulterate). 1. Any thick liquid or semi-fluid used as a
lubricant or absorbent - 2. a surface dressing , e.g. varnish for aeroplanes
1912 - 3. a preparation of opium or other narcotic, esp for doctoring
horses; any narcotic 1889 - 4. Information about a racehorse's condition ...
1901 ..." I have heard the word being used as getting the good dope
(information) on something, that someone is a dope, that something is a
dopey thing to do.

Are we being carried away a bit?

Hugo Zweep
