>China Plate - rhyming slang for "mate"<

And also my son's nickname!

We had his names ready for him - David Alexander - for his two grandfathers
- but once he was born, they just didn't seem to fit.

So we debated with friends and almost decided on Tom - one friend who moved
away referred to him for years on Christmas cards as Tom! But then decided
against that.......... so for 4 days he remained nameless.

But my sister-in-law took one look at this much debated babe and said :
Never mind , my old china, you'll get a name some day.

And somehow the 'China' stuck and was the only name he recognised until he
went to school. In the months before this event one of his grandmothers
gave him 'David' practice, because she said he would be at a disadvantage
if he didn't answer to the name the teachers would use.

He is still China to me and my husband - with the inevitable shortening to
'Chink' . But he did eventually get christened with the names that we had
thought of in the 1st place!

Heather
