And being the shape I am I love my long handled shoehorn which allows me to
get into my walking boots without bending too far!

Hi everyone,

the search for mathematical vocabulary for Low Saxon continues.
The current status is found in
http://nds.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kategorie:Mathematik
which by now contains 14 articles.

But now to my question: one core word of mathematics is the
"equation" (German: Gleichung). One proposal was "Glieken": translation of
gleich=>gliek and replacing the ung-suffix, which quite at least some areas
of LS do not use and consider to be this HG influence (regardless of whether
that is historically true).
But still this word does sound awkward.

I then checked the translations of equation into other germanic languages.
Swedish: Ekvation
Norsk: ligning
Dutch: vergelijking

I was a bit puzzeled over dutch. From
http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vergelijking I then learned that this word does
have a double meaning. One seems to be "comparison" and the other
(mathematical) meaning is "equation".

This is a bit strange, as an equation regards both sides as equal, whereas a
comparison of two sides might come to the conclusion that both sides are
different.

I then found out that we have a similar word in LS: "Vergliek" plus the verb
"verglieken" and pondered whether this might be a possible word for
"equation". I am not really sure, but I start to like it.

So my questions:
* does Dutch really say that a mathematical equation is a comparison?
* and if so: would Vergliek be a suitable LS word? Like in
** "Laat uns dat as 'n (mathemaatschen) Vergliek opschrieven: x=5+y"
** "Wi wullt nun dissen Vergliek lösen/oplösen"
** "In de Mathematik is de Lien de Koppel vun Punkten, de op den Vergliek
y=a*x+b höört"/"..de den Vergliek y=a*x+b erfüllt(Platt?)"

Compare this to
** "Laat uns dat as 'n (mathemaatsche) Glieken opschrieven: x=5+y"
** "Wi wullt nun disse Glieken lösen/oplösen"
** "In de Mathematik is de Lien de Koppel vun Punkten, de op de Glieken
y=a*x+b höört"/"..de Glieken y=a*x+b erfüllt(Platt?)"

(where "erfüllt" (an equation) is another word that is lacking).

Any other proposals? Any old dictionaries at hand that have a word for this?

Zu dumm, dass unsere Vorväter die wissenschaftliche Seite des plattdeutschen
so verlottern ließen. Alles hat man dem Hochdeutschen überlassen. Die
Niederländer sind da mit ihrer Sprache besser umgegangen.

By my is 't lyk so by 't "Pruyssche".  Is ook tou verstaan, niks oever tou 
schamen, dücht my.

Nun, ja ...  Die eigentliche Schuld sollte man wohl doch eher dem 
"deutsch-getriebenen" Staatswesen zuschieben. Es hatte es erlaubt oder gar 
anordnet, dass den Kindern die Erbsprache vom ersten Schultag an 
ausgeprügelt wird. Folgedessen haftet der Sprache allgemein, sogar unter den 
Sprechern selber, das Image der Minderwertigkeit und Nutzlosigkeit anhaftet. 
Dies erreichte man mittels Vernachlässigung, Verboten, Statusverweigerung 
und indirekter Propaganda (= mittels deutsch-zentrierter Schulbildung). 
Trotz offizieller Anerkennung kann man diesem Denken nicht so leicht und 
rasch entgegenwirken, da zudem konservatives Denken und beschränkte 
Weltanschauungen in der Sprechergemeinschaft auf deutscher Seite 
vorherrschen.

Der Fall der Niederlande ist damit nicht zu vergleichen, da unsere 
niederländischen (wie auch "flämischen") Verwandten im Stande waren, sich 
die Unabhängigkeit von Deutschland zu sichern und sie sich (vom 2. Weltkrieg 
einmal abgesehen) zu erhalten.  Somit ist das sich auf das Holländische 
stützende Niederländische seit langem eine Nationalsprache, war zudem eine 
Kolonialsprache.  Diesen Status hat der sächsischsprachige Bereich seit dem 
Untergang der Hanse nicht erringen können.  Hätte er es errungen, wäre die 
Originalsprache Norddeutschlands und der östlichen Niederlande jetzt ebenso 
eine Nationalsprache.  Wäre Norddeutschland jedoch den Niederlanden 
zugesprochen worden, hätte man auch uns Norddeutschen das Niederländische 
"aufgebürdet."  Wie man allerdings am Fall der Mundarten der östlichen 
Niederlande sieht, wäre der Lexikalschwund in dem Fall weniger drastisch 
gewesen, da doch zumindest die Einflüsse des eng verwandten Holländischen 
gewissermaßen die lexikale Flexibilität und Stabilität der sächsischen 
Mundarten sichern, während (hoch-)deutsche Einflüsse authentischen Sprechern 
weitaus als weitaus störender auffallen.
