Hello Heiko and Ron,
Re: Himmel vs Heven.
In Dutch there is Hemel for the religious meaning and maybe as dwelling
place for the stars. The Gods built that.
en Lucht for the place where the birds dwell. The Dutch verb "opheffen"
means to lift up; we could have built it ourselves.

However, another lighbulb went off.
Hemel (Himmel) is a heavenly vault that protects us spiritually.
but the German word "Heim" has pulled that back in the realm of mere
mortals. It becomes literally a roof over our heads. Then follow the words
"Geheim" (German and Dutch for secret) and hence "heimelijk" Dutch for
hidden, kept secret.
Thanks for the "Aha Erlebnis. Jacqueline

Thanks, Jacqueline.

In Low Saxon, too, at least in Germany, there is _luft_ ~ _lucht_ ~ _locht_
for 'air' (related to English "loft"), which, besides meaning 'air' and
'oxygen' in general, can refer to lofty heights, the place between earth and
sky. But in its traditional sense it is not the same as _heven_ ~ _heben_
'sky'. For instance, clouds (_wulken_ ~ _wolken_) are said to be in the sky
(_heven_), but birds (_vagels_) are usually considered to fly in the air
(_luft_ ~ _lucht_). If you said that a bird was flying in the sky it would
mean really, really far up.

Heaven:

Old Low Franc. _himel_
Old Frisian: himel ~ himul
Old English: heofon, heofone, híehþu, hrôf, lyft, rodor,
     staþol, swegel, swegelbôsm, weder
Old German: luft, himil (rare: heban)

Gothic: himins

Air:
