There was no assured succession in A/S times. True a few sons did follow
fathers but only because they appeared to have a strong hand and convinced
the Witan they could handle things.
The moment they showed weakness, someone else was allowed to muscle in.

It was strength of arms and the number of  followers that kept a 'king' in
power - that and the holy oil he was annointed with at his coronation ( or
so the Holy Archbishops would have other pretenders believe!)
