That's right, of course. But the mental images that arise when we hear that
someone is of Irish, Italian, and Inuit descent, are much clearer and a lot
more colourful than what we know (or think we know) of Teutonic and whatnot
ancestors (don't even remember most of your list, history has never been my
favourite subject) a great many centuries ago, and therefore it just seems
"cooler" because it immediately evokes certain concepts (may they be fact or
prejudice).
