From: 'Scat' <Scat at cfl.rr.com>
Subject: Phonemic inventories; wasLL-L 'Language contacts' 2006.06.10 (03) [E]

In lieu of conscious and unconscious, I would say naïve and
learned--referring to someone who
understands phonology. In talking to someone who is a speechreader or to a
group that includes
at least one speechreader--the preferred term in the USA because much more
than the lips are
observed--I am careful to enunciate more precisely than I normally would.
The same is true when
I am speaking to a group for whom English is a second language--unless,of
course, I am teaching
ESOL, in which case I speak very casually. I believe that careful speakers
try to pronounce
words to the best of their knowledge. Until I studied the IPA, I did not
realize how to pronounce
'loch'.
