Ron in his answer to Sandy's e-mail, contributes a couple of examples of the
use of negatives under "tentative" circumstances.

> tentative or undiscovered:

> English: "I'll see if I can do that."
> Scots: "I'll see if I canna dae that."

> English: "I'll just go and check on what they might be up to."
> Scots: "I'll juist awa an see what they'r no daein."

The same happens in Dutch:
"Ik zal wel zien of ik dat niet voor je doen kan"
" ik zal eens kijken of ik of ze geen kattekwaad uithalen" (D. kattekwaad
uit halen = being up to (juvenile) no good.
Both these sentences are indeed tentative the use of "wel" and "eens" after
the verbal form of zullen makes it so.

I would not be surprised if that happens in other lowland languages too.
