Subject: Members' news

Dear Lowlanders,

This message is about and for our Arthur (<arthurobin2002 at yahoo.com>)whose
mother, Alice Myrtle Ashley Jones, born in 1916, passed away last night.

I have been in touch with my friend Arthur by telephone and e-mail and have
expressed to him and his wife Robin my sincere condolence. As I well know, one
can never be really be prepared for losing ones mother, at any age and under any
circumstance.

Arthur wrote a poem about this event this morning, and he kindly shared it with
me and gave me permission to pass it on to you and to translate it. Please find
it below.

Regards,
Reinhard/Ron

Original version
by Arthur A. Jones (June 11, 2006):

   The eagle mother is gone.
        Whether she soared away,
   Or folded wings in plunge,
        Heart-stopping,
   I cannot know.
   But this I saw:
        Before she left, she
   Gyred, and turned, and smiled;
And I should do no less.

Low Saxon (Low German) translation
by Reinhard F. Hahn
for Arthur A. Jones in friendship

   De Aadlermoder is nu weg.
Is se wull hooch na baven flagen
Or hett ähr Flünken foldt to'n Störten,
        Dat Hart anholen?
Wodennig kunn 'n Minsch dat wäten?
Man sülven sehen dä ik düt:
        Vör se güng,
Dreih se sik nochmaal üm un smüüster.
Un ik? Ik schull dat jüst so doon.

ANS orthography version:

Or het er vlünken voldt tou'n störten,
        Dat hart an-holden?
Woudennig kun 'n minsch dat weten?
Man sülven seyen deed' ik düt:

German translation
by Reinhard F. Hahn
for Arthur A. Jones in friendship

   Die Adlermutter ist nun fort.
Ist sie wohl hoch hinauf entflogen?
Hat sie die Flügel angelegt zum Sturz,
        Das Herz zum Stillstand bringend?
   Wie könnte ich es wissen?
   Doch sah ich dies:
        Vor ihrem Scheiden
   Drehte sie sich nochmal lächelnd um;
Und dies zu tun gebührt auch mir.
