    thoroughly trounce the World Class English a humiliation that's conveniently
    forgotten those days.

Oh, no, it's not! Anyone who was aware at the time recalls it!
 
Actually, the USA is higher in the FIFA World Rankings than England, France or
Italy. Admittedly there is talk of reviewing how those rankings are derived.
