As for the lady, it's "my" Auntie Clara (who passed away not too long
ago).

I am very sorry to hear that. My condolances and at least you have done
the wonderful action of recording/preserving many of her memories and
wisdom and family tradition for later generations who should treasure
them. It is far too often that such tradition, memories and experiences
in life are lost.

I suggest that the younger members and lurkers of this list do the same
and "pump" as we say (i.e. encourage) older family members to share with
you there stories (icluding the ones THEIR folks were better off not
knowing - those old folks were young once). Put it on paper so that it
never goes away (who can find an 8 track tape today?)as well as tape,
MP3, etc. Also make a family tree and what is known of each (where, when
, who , why, occupation, special events, where buried, etc.) and mark up
all photo's in home before who is on them is forgotten. Teens and young
20's seldom are interested it seems (I was different in that) but later
family origins and history interest is reawakened when it is almost too
late. Such info should be stored in 2 copies, one in a safe, fire/flood
place - not behind a weak dike - and copies made for each child, nephew
, etc. I was surprised and delighted that my cousin Karl Schulte of
"Electro-Schulte" store in Emden had our Texas Schulte's down to my
father (Johann Heinrich Schulte - John Henry in everyday use)birth
notice in 1918. He added what I could furnish when we met in his home.
NOW is about the right time; we can get to know that great grandfather
who loved us as a baby, but who passed away when we were small. Modern
life tends to sunder families; this is a way to bring them together in
time and space.

Thanks, Karl.  Once I have this protracted relocation to California over and 
done with, I will revamp and extend her web presentation.  There are tons of 
her material in my stash, some of it unpublished, and that includes sound 
recordings.

Furthermore, eventually I will do a similar thing for my friend Hannelore 
Hinz ("Treckfiedel-Hanne" ["Squeezebox Jeanie," _Trekorgel-Hansje_]) who 
lives in Swerin/Schwerin, Mäkelnborg/Mecklenburg, in what used to be east of 
the Iron Curtain.  (What joy to be reunited with folks there, despite 
current economic problems!  Most people in Germany may have become jaded 
about it, but for me it's still like a miracle.)  Hanne is mentioned and can 
be seen and listened to here:

a great afficionado of people who dare to be "real characters," I am growing 
into a Hanne fan.  Hannelore Hinz and Treckfiedel-Hanne are two personae. 
The former often writes and performs "serious" literature and is a Low Saxon 
instructor at a community college.  The latter is a riot, appears on the 
scene out of the blue with her beloved and by some dreaded squeezebox, not 
infrequently with her flowery hat, and before you know what has hit you're 
being serenaded by accordion music and old-time rap with very clear 
pronunciation and a "broad" Mecklenburg accent.  Treckfiedel-Hanne crashes 
many a serious or somber gathering, such as college classes, children's 
hospital wards or nursing home slumber party.  Some of her verses bring a 
smile even to the most surly person, yet it's none of the usual "silly" 
humor, just a lighter look at the little things in life.  Together, 
Hannelore Hinz and Treckfiedel-Hanne have written an impressive number of 
songs, many of them published.  What's more, together they make up Hanning,* 
a great friend of the appreciative and considerate type.  [* _-ing_ ~ 
_-ink_, probably derived from Pomeranian Slavonic _-inka_, is a diminutive 
ending in the northeastern dialects.]  So this is a preview of things to 
come, things to read and hear.  Yesterday I received a package full of 
goodies from Schwerin, including excellent recordings.
