Beste Lowlanders,
De "sch" beantwoordt aan een ouder "sk" wat nog te horen is in Deens, Noors,
Frysk, en ook in het zuiden van twee Vlaamse provincies, namelijk
Oost-Vlaanderen (streek Geraardsbergen) en West-Vlaanderen (streek
Kortrijk). In het noorden van mijn provincie klinkt het "s.oon" (Torhout),
of "sjoon" (richting De Panne, Frans-Vlaanderen), in mijn stad Oostende en
omliggende "sjchoon"(SXO:N en niet sXO:n).
Maar ik wilde inzonderheid dit kwijt: de uitgang was inderdaad -sch
(Nederlandsch, Vlaamsch) en aan de Vlaamse kust zeggen we nog steeds
Nederlaansjche en Vlamsjche. Maar de uitgang -isch werd oorspronkelijk
beschouwd als een germanisme; Atlantische had moeten zijn Atlantse;
Belgische dan Belgse. In het West-Vlaams, een conservatief dialect, zegt men
trouwens Belgsjche!
