Oh, Mark, but the bowing is mutual!

I was pleased to discover that we have yet another object of appreciation 
and admiration in common, a magnificent, albeit generally under-appreciated 
one that is the product of overlapping languages and traditions. 
Under-appreciation is most likely due to European fear of Islam and European 
tendencies toward trivializing the influences Islamic cultures had on 
European cultures, not only in Iberia but beyond that.

The _kharja_ and its close relatives span an area from Portugal to Western 
China (e.g., the Uyghur ناخشى _naxši_) and from India to Siberia (e.g., the 
Tatar җыр _şır_ and the Bashkir йырҙар _yırðar_).  I wonder if anything 
rubbed off on the Lowlands traditions at least indirectly.
