Your thesis has handsome support in this song from the other end of the
Mediterranean; the Greek song Miserlu:

All this by courtesy of the MIT songbook snaffled from my wife's records. I
take it the editors can't or can't be bothered to translate the non-Greek;
oh well.

I don't know if this should be traced back to the Ladinos that settled in
Ottoman Greece, or something with an earlier origin.

Thanks, Mark!

I wish we could drag this out, but it's getting pretty un-Lowlandic were
it not for the English translations.  ;-)

I don't think there's a Ladino link.  The song (whose tune is also used
for _Zulima_ in the West ... or is it _Zulika_?) appears to be from the
time when both Egypt and Greece were under Ottoman rule.  Note that Arabic
_ya habibi_ 'my love!' is used a lot in Turkish songs as well.

See "my" version below, and say hi to the missus!

"MIT songbook"?  What is it?  Published by the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology?  ;-)
