From: Mathias Rösel [Mathias.Roesel at t-online.de]
Subject: sign for umlaut etc

Dear Reinhard,

why is it that signs for umlaut and apostrophe etc don't come through?
In other words, what must I do so as to make umlauts visible the way
they are written in German (vowels with two dots above them)?

Best,

Hi, Mathias!

The postings are sent out in Unicode (UTF-8) encoding. To read it in this
encoding, you need to choose this encoding in the (German equivalent of) view
menu of your browser. If you can't find it, perhaps someone in a German-speaking
country can tell us what it's called. (I am not one of them, live in the USA and
hardly ever handled computers in Germany.)

The mail program we're using isn't ideal, by the way. Eventually we'll switch to
another one that handles these things more easily.

Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
