There is a very good website which shows how 'we' got to where we are
(unfortunately, it ends in prehistory, just as things (to my mind) get
interesting: http://www.bradshawfoundation.com/journey/

Talking about websites that show animated maps of historic population
movements reminds me .... if someone can point me at a website I found
years ago, and cannot now find, I would be very grateful: someone had
put in data about the ships of early Dutch traders, which showed little
ships sailing further and further around the world.
