Haai Reinhard en Elsie,

Ek het die woord _braaf_ in verskeie woordeboeke 'nagesoek' en gevind dat Elsie
se bewering dat _braaf_  oorspronklik 'deugsaam' maar nou 'heldhaftig' beteken,
reg is. Moontlik het ons hier met 'n Engelse leenbetekenis te doene. Die HAT
(1988) sê:

'Braaf, b.nw. en bw. Gaaf, goed, deugsaam: "Sy brawe ouers." "'n Brawe Hendrik,
Maria" = seun, dogter wat [kastig (=zogenaamd - MB) baie voorbeeldig is. Opm.
_braaf_ het nie in Afr. die betekenis van "dapper" nie.'

Interessant is dat die Afrikaanse woord _bra_  uit _braaf_ voortgekom het. Dit
beteken 'taamlik, baie erg, eintlik' of 'haas'. In gewestelike Nederlands vind
ons ook die woord, soos in Antwerps en Limburgs _bra_, wat 'taamlik' en 'baie
erg' beteken. Die orige betekenisse het in Suid-Afrika ontwikkel. 

Kiliaen (sestiende eeu!) noem ook _brave_, maar as vreemde woord, sonder
spesifieke betekenisse. Dit kom van sestiende-eeuse Frans _brave_, wat aan
Italiaanse _bravo_ ontleen is, wat weer ontleen is aan die Spaanse woord _bravo_,
wat 'wild' (gesê van 'n dier)  en 'onvrugbaar' beteken.

"Na, bravo", sou Aartshertog Franz-Karl in Ernst Marischka se Sissi-rolprente
gesê het.
