Nou ja, daar het jy dit; 'tessie' in Afrikaans lyk my kom
waarskynlik van 'test' waarin die kooltjies geplaas is.

Hi Elsie, everyone,

My mother living in Drenthe the Netheralnds used a "stoof"= the wooden box
with one side open en holes in the upperside. Inside there was a
"test"(pottery) In the test they put few red-hot coal, directly from the
oven.
As far as I know it is a Drents(low saxon) word. I never red nor heard it in
Dutch. Further origin of the word I do not know. About a year ago we
mentioned it also on this list.

Bij mijn weten is stoof een gewoon Nederlands woord. Mijn oma had er een in
huis en noemde die ook "stoof". Zij woonde in West Nederland, maar is
oorspronkelijk uit de Betuwe. Ver buiten het Nedersaksisch gebied dus. Ik
heb zelf ook nooit een andere benaming gehoord voor een stoof dan stoof.

(As far as I know stoof is an ordinary Dutch word. My grandmother owned one
and she called it "stoof". She lived in the western part of The Netherlands,
but she originates from the Betuwe. Far off Lower Saxon territory. I never
heard an other expression for stoof than stoof.)

De online Van Dale zegt over "stoof" het volgende:

stoof (de ~, stoven)
1 kastje met gaten in het bovenstuk, geschikt om een test vuur in te zetten,
als voetwarmer
2 droogoven

Hi, It happens that I have a such one.
But I never used it; I'm still not old enough for it.
The word is common dutch.
