Hi all,

I just went to see my advisor at ASU (Arizona State University), and her
name intrigued me. I thought that I had heard it "Wudu", so I was looking
forward to some sort of nice, exhotic name. Then she said how it's spelled,
and it was Wouda. She then stated that it's "Dutch". I put it in quotes
because I know that Dutch has tons of dialects and different little local
brogues. Does anybody know what it means and where it's from? She pronounced
it /vauda/ (Approximate IPA).

Ben,

My guess is that Wouda comes from *Wolda:

wold > woud 'woods', 'forest' (cf. LS Wold, German Wald, English "wold," as
in Codswold)
a 'river (with green banks)' (cf. German Au, -ah(e), -a, Swedish å)

Dutch underwent a regular shift from -old to -oud ([OUt} > [aUt]); e.g.

old > oud 'old'
gold > goud 'gold'
kold > koud 'cold'

Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
