Dear All,

Here is a nice way to while away a Sunday afternoon - help write the
Oxford English Dictionary:
http://www.oed.com/bbcwordhunt/

There are many words for which the etymology is unknown (e.g. bonkers,
prat, shaggy dog story), and where readers here may be able to point to
it being a loan in from another Lowlands language. Those of you who are
translators may recall the first time you met words such as shell suit,
mucky pup or tosser.

Cheers,

Pat

I know (from rural Northamptonshire, 40 years ago) 'Beast' as not just
'cattle' (singluar used for plural - "I'll get the beast in so the Vet
can run his eye over them"), but a very specific kind: neutered males
older than calves, but not fully mature (not that most of them got fully
mature: most were turned into beef before that.

Cheers,

Pat

Hi all,

Mark, all, the Afrikaans equivalent is 'dier' rather than 'deer'.

Regards,
