Hi all,

Nora, the 'beerleeu' probably refers to a mythical beast rather than a real
animal.

I found reference to this on the website:

http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:fDvjAm5xDu4J:www.arts.kuleuven.be/Afrikaans/les7.doc+%22beerleeu%22&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=uk

I can only assume it's a lion-like animal that could walk on its hind legs.

Regards,

Elsie Zinsser

>From Wim and Nora RE the "beerleeu":

Sounds much like the so-called "Nandi Bear" that has been reported from
Africa since the 19th Century. A large agressive animal that isn't quite
like anything curently known. Suggestions include:

A hyaena, but not closely related to well-known modern African species
A giant baboon
Too much colonial pink gin.
