Hi all,

Thanks for the responses about 'maskie'.

Edith Raidt says ("Afrikaans en sy Europese verlede"),
that maskie (> Port. mas que; A. miskien, tog, dalk) was
used in Cape archival writing since 1714, but was known in
Dutch since 1700, (and she quotes Rebelo).

The Afrikaans 'almaskie' was only used much later.

In Boshoff and Nienaber's "Afrikaanse Etimologieë", "alla" possibly
comes from the Arabic *ualah (*A. 'vooruit') or is derived from 'Allah'.

Cheerio!
