Beste Reinhardt,

as a Hamburgish local patriot ;-) you proudly mention the new project
*'Ballin-Stadt'
*and forget to tell about the really great *'Deutsches Auswanderer-Haus'* (
English homepage: http://www.dah-bremerhaven.de/english/hauptseite_e.html )
in *Bremerhaven*, which also deals with the same, the emigration of
continental Europeans to abroad.

I've made a visit there last year and was deeply impressed. Before you're
allowed to enter the inner rooms of the museum you will be asked if you
really want to leave your homeland, and then you'll feel as if you're going
aboard of one of those sailing- or steaming vessels which were specialised
for emigrants- the slight movement of a ship lying at a pier included.
You'll get a real passenger's identity out of their great archieves and can
make yourself familiar with her/his faith from birth to (sometimes) dead.
We met a lot of American citizens there who fascinated followed the tracks
of their ancestors (or even found their own ones) and dealt with the very
informative material (films and documentations) the museum can offer.

If any American is interested in her/his 'oldies' I just recommend to make a
visit there- in the public archieves, called *'Forum Migration'* you could
find your own ancestors' names...

Allerbest!

Thanks, Jonny.

Well, the topic of my piece (lowlands-l.net/travels/ballin-stadt.php) is
"Ballin-Stadt," so it's specific to Hamburg and the new project.

It is true, though, that in it I mentioned Triest (for the Austro-Hungarian
Empire), and for that reason I've now added one to Bremerhaven as well.

There are differences, though. The new museum in Bremerhaven (for which I
suggest a separate brief article) is the Deutsches Auswanderhaus (German
Emigrants' House) which seems to be focused on German Emigrants. The
Hamburg facilities served not only German emigrants but also those from
other countries, especially from Eastern Europe. Those folks had already
left their respective native countries by the time they arrived at the
Veddel.

Interestingly, the Bremerhaven museum's focus is on emigration from Germany
to America. I was under the impression that many or most German emigrants
bound for Australia and New Zealand sailed from there as well. Generally
speaking, I find it interesting that in Germany mention of historic
emigration tends to mention only the USA. It is true that it was the main
destination (and a very large percentage of US citizens today are of at
least part German descent), but there was also a lot of emigration to
Canada, Latin America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

Thanks again (also for consistently adding a "t" to my name)!

Reinhard/Ron
