I know (from rural Northamptonshire, 40 years ago) 'Beast' as not just
'cattle' (singluar used for plural - "I'll get the beast in so the Vet
can run his eye over them"), but a very specific kind: neutered males
older than calves, but not fully mature (not that most of them got fully
mature: most were turned into beef before that.
