Beste Lowlanders, Ron, Elsie, Theo en alle anderen,
In het West-Vlaams krijgen plaatsnamen "den" als het hieropvolgende woord
niet onzijdig is en met een klinker begint (de "h" wordt niet uigesproken):
Den Hoane = De Haan (vroeger ook in het Nederlands "Den Haan"), Den Opex =
De Opex (visserswijk te Oostende) ...
Zo ook: den overkant, den andere kant, den aikeboom (de eik), den appel ...
en ook de aanwijzende voornaamwoorden: dien overkant, dien appel ...
Wat de familienamen betreft:
"Vander-..." (of "Ver-...")    wordt gevolgd door een vrouwelijk woord:
Vanderbeke, Vanderwiele, Vanderplaetse, Verbeke, Vergracht, Verhofstee,
Verhulst, Vermeulen ...
"Vanden-..." wordt gevolgd door een niet-vrouwelijk woord: Vandenberghe,
Vandenabeele, Vandenheuvel (of Vanhille, Vanhulle) ...
En de familenamen met "De-...", zoals mijn familienaam Desnerck?
Sommige beginnen met "Den-...": Dendooven, Denduyver, Denhert...
In sommige (oude) woorden zitten de datieven en accusatieven vesteend,
zoals: inderdaad (in de daad), inderhaast (in der haast), mettertijd (met de
tijd) ...
