This thread got me to go back and look for the SAMPA symbols.  While looking
at it, I noticed something that I either don't know or have forgotten.  What
distinguishes an "open" from a "close" vowel?  Also, what does "lax" mean in
this context?  I don't mean the airport in Los Angeles either ;-).
