Hi Reinhard

I've never heard anyone except visiting North Americans pronounce it BAY-zil
in SE Ausstralia. In Tasmania and Victoria at least it is usually pronounced
bazzle - although that is based only on my personal experience and that
conclusion might be Fawlty.

Cheers

Good morning down under from the previous evening up over, Andrys, and
thanks for the response!

The people that I heard making the difference were born and bred West
Australians of the post-war generations. One of them made a point of
teaching me the difference, which I adopted at the time. Now I use the Yank
pronunciation "BAY-zle" for both.

A Lebanese friend of mine just called his tom kitten Basil, because the
little guy fell in love with a potted basil plant. It takes all sorts ...

Cheerio!

Reinhard/Ron
