Subject: Names

Dear Lowlanders,

I know some people in Australia that pronounce the personal name "Basil" as
"Bazzle" but pronounce the name of the herb "basil" as "BAY-zl".

How far spread is this pronunciation distinction?

Hello Reinhard,
We all say Bazzle for both herb and name here in New South Wales. I have
heard Bayzl but only on television shows from the US. Mind you I have heard
marjoram called marjorie many times.
