   - As Heather already mentioned, mashed potatoes and swedes (*tatties
an neeps*) are an accompaniment to haggis

When I prepare a Shepherd's Pie I add a layer of mashed swedes over the meat
base. I then cover it with cheesy mashed potatoes
and oven bake.I process the meat with a medium carrot and some onion prior
to cooking.
Just happens that I have some left over roast lamb from last night
sooo........

   - Before pumpkins were commonly available in Britain, Halloween was
celebrated with hollowed-out swedes as "jack o' lanterns" in England and as
    *tumshie lanterns* in Scotland.

In Lothians we called Swedes "Neeps" and the l.ights "Neep Lanterns".
Plump wee bairns were referred to as "Right wee Tumshies" and the vegetable
could also be used as a term of endearment to
a child or even pet. eg "Ye're Yer Mammie's Wee Tumshie".
