Marcus and Ron wrote about the birch bark letters found in Nowgorod

What wonderful finds!

2 questions:

1. The writing appears to be concentrated on the top part only, which also
seems to be differently worn than the rest: is it a tally stick rather than
a letter? Tally sticks had somethiong recorded only at one end because they
were kept bunched but could be splayed out for reading. Also they were
stored stuck into small jars so that their message could be read without
being removed from the jar.

2. Is it just my eyes or is there more writing below the K/N IE ?

Brilliant, Jacqueline!

I guess I had something like that in the back of my mind. (Brilliant minds
do think alike, don't they? ;-) )

This would also tally ("ha ha!") with what I have a feeling the inscription
says.

Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
