I have been away for a few days, so I will be probably repeating what
others say on this thread (and the architecture thread).

As some of you know I am just completing a PhD in archaeology, looking
at the use of wall anchors (muurankers) around the world - including our
own North Sea and Baltic. I am using animated digital mapping, which I
_should_ be able to make available over the internet. So you will be
able to see maps where these buildings occur. Something similar could
be done for occurrences of language use, presence of people with
'Frisian' names, or indeed anything which has both a 'where' and a
'when'. See www.ecai.org for examples of other maps that do this.

From my point of view (an archaeologists - and we tend take the long
duree view, even when looking at a building that was erected in a few
weeks) the Hanse was not a dramatically different culture contact - long
and short distance trade across this part of Europe stretches back into
prehistory, and forwards to the present day.

Many years ago, I was involved in a large exhibition on the Hanse, which
has two huge catalogues : Die Hanse - Lebenswirklichkeit und Mythos
(http://www.librarything.com/work/2475907/details/12003818) - which I
recommend to anyone interested in the 'stuff' of the Hanse.

Cheers,

Pat

It may look messy now ...
... but just you come back in 500 years time (T. Pratchett).
