Beste Lowlanners,

these days I got an interesting book, written by a local pastor and
historican in the middle of the 18th century.
Among a lot of other interesting stuff I found a list of Frisian words which
already in the authors time had been aspected as 'old'. You have to be
somewhat critically, because the author himself came from a different region
(near Hamburg) with a different language.

In spite of that perhaps one or another of you will find pleasure with them,
so I made some effort for myself and wrote them down. The translations of
course are authored into the kind of German which was written at that time,
and so I added an English translation where necessary.

*Aubar.* Kund und offenbar. [apparent]
*Babbe.Bibbe.* Vater. [father]
*Bakels.* Die Lehne an einem Stuhl. [back of a chair]
*Bleck*. *Vicus.* Ein Fleck. [spot]
*Beknüppen.* Einem eine Sache einschärfen, auftragen, einbinden. [to tell
sb. to do sth.]
*Belastet.* Aufgetragen. Empfohlen. [recommended]
*Block.* Ein Stück Landes. [a piece of land]
*Bett.* Ferner. Mehr. [furtheron]* Doet my dat nich bett.* [stop doing that]
*Beddels. Biddels.* Eine gewisse Maasse auf einem Acker, welches man zu
bearbeiten,zu pflügen,    zu Mähen sich vorsetzt.[daily task]
*Buck und Back* sagt man von einer Magd, die von solcher Leibesconstitution
ist, daß sie gut arbeiten kan. [it's said from a farmgirl of good
constitution]
*Bedröven* heißt nicht allein *traurig*- [sad] sondern auch *trübe*
[bleard]machen.
*He het neen* *(nie ein?? Anm. J.M.)** Water bedrövet* i.e. Er ist
unschuldig. [he is innocent]
*Betengen.* Anfangen, beginnen. [to start]
*Bitt.* Eine Oefnung im Eise, um Wasser daraus zu schöpfen. Anderwärts nennt
man es *eine Waake*.

*Deepe.* Die Tiefe. So nennt man hier einen Hafen. *Portus.*
*Doent*. Sache. *Et is en net doent.* Es ist eine gute Sache. *(?? I better
know: Et is net en doent. Es ist egal, einerlei. [It doesn't matter] Anm.

*Dwalen.* Thorheit begehen. [to fool around]
*Daak.* Das Fell. Die Haut. [skin]* Hinc* afdaaken. Imgleichen der Nebel.[same
word for fog]
*Drege.* Ist ein Segnungswort. [blessing] *Gott drege de bottern. Gott drege
den Kornhupen* sagt jemand, wenn er in ein Haus kömt, wo gebuttert
[bottered], oder gedroschen [threshed] wird.
*Escher.* Grabschaufel. Spaten.[spade]
*Endig.* Geschwinde. [fast, quick]
*Ellen. Illen.* Aufhalten. [to stop so./sth. or to end??]
*Enter.* Ein Kalb von einem Jahr. (calf]
*Folgedach.* Todestag.[death-day]
*Getaket.* Beschaffen. [adj. structured, conditioned; but also could mean
verb. to acquire] *Ick mot seen, wo de Sake getaket is. *[Ihave to look how
things a running.] *(?? Doubts allowed? Anm. J.M.)*
*Hamm.* Ein abgetheiltes Stück Grasland. [a piece of grassland]
*Halmen.* Wenn das kranke Vieh wieder anfängt zu fressen. [sick cattle
starts to eat again] *Et halmet all wedder.*
*Husholt.* Ein Sarg. [coffin]
*Hoeren.* Ein Winkel. Eine Ecke. [edge]
*Interdiis.* Zwischen beiden. Ist wol aus dem Lateinischen *intes duos* oder
*duo* entstanden.
*Iisbeen.* Das Hinterbein an einem Schwein. [nuckle of pork]
*Jück.* Ein halber Morgen Landes. [quarter of an acre]
*Keren. Ankeren.* Geschäftig. *He is hille ankeret.* [busy]
*Lutmaerig.* Was nicht mehr geheim, sondern schon unter die Leute gekommen
ist. [open, no secret]
*Miest.* Der Nebel. *Miestig.* Neblich. [fog]
*Pesel.* Die Stube im Hause. [main room]
*Specken.* Der Landweg nach der Geest zu. [way]
*Tier.* Guter Muth. Gute Gesundheit. [good health, mind] *Up sin Tier
sin.*Guthes Muthes seyn. Sich wohl befinden.
*Tüntel.* Zaudern. Verzögern. [to delay]
*Upweer.* Wenn nach vielem Regen und trüben Wolken der Himmel sich aufklärt.

*Weersdage.* Sommertage. [summerdays]
