From: Mark Dreyer <mrdreyer at lantic.net>
Subject: LL-L "Etymology" 2008.05.21 (01) [E/German]

 Dear All:

Subject History

(Ron, this is far from 'Lowlands' matter, so if you see fit please nix it,
but I am leaning on the broad knowledge-base of our Lowlanders.)

I'm looking up information about a diminutive race of people in the Basque
country dating to as recently as our Christian era. Reputedly they were of
extremely slight stature, fair with very dark hair & eyes, & for a last
distinguishing feature, had no lobes to their ears. It seems they provoked
the hostility of the Basques themselves, to the extent that they obtained
a Papal Injunction against this folk, prohibiting them from trying to
associate with men of normal stature, & compelling them to live in their own
communities, worship separately, & show their 'caste' by wearing an
arrowmark embroidered on their garments. I was lured to the impression that
they have by this time acquired the aura of a faery folk, rather more
mythical than actual.

Quite beside the point, Ruth & I are friendly with an ethnic Portuguese
family, going by the name 'de Vasconselos', which seems to me to be a dead
giveaway right there. The entire family, man & wife, son & daughter have
long straight ebony hair (the females), eyes of such deep blue they are
almost black, & very fair complexions. They all stand about 1,5m (for
Americans, about 5 foot tall) in their bare feet, & for the last point of
note have indeed no earlobes whatsoever. They apparently know nothing at all
about this tale I have just told you.

They have not the least bit of resemblance, in features or in build to the
Basques I have met, & I mentioned the point of earlobes to a Basque & his
wife on Kibbutz Ulpan in Israel, & the man said, pointing to his wife's
adornments, "Why do you suppose our mothers have their daughters' ears
pierced since almost before toddlers stage - to show they have earlobes." So
it appeared.

By the way, leaning into my anthropological interests, the daughter
Berengaira & for all I know her mother too knows far more than a good girl
should about the 'Magna Mater' & I am NOT referring to 'Wicca'.

Ron would probably prefer you to respond privately.

Yrs,
Mark.
