Hello to Peter and all other Lowlanders.



I'd like to know the derivation of the Norwegian "ort" before we link it to
a "quart". The "quart" is simply an abbreviation of "quarter" being a
quarter of a gallon or 2 pints in the Imperial system of measuring liquid.
From it comes the Australian "quart pot" which is the same as a "billycan"
used to boil water to make tea in the Australian bush - such as the swagman
boiled before the jumbuck came to the waterhole, whereupon the squatter rode
down with the troopers one, two and three.

das Problem hatte ich auch! Einer meiner ältesten Nachbarn und liebsten
Mentoren (sehr konservativ, eher low-educated  und sicher kein gourmet)
hatte mir vor einigen Jahren den Tipp gegeben, zu einem bestimmten Gericht
(Suppe???) auf alle Fälle Ingwer zur Würze zu verwenden. Ich war erstaunt -
in unserer Region ist sicherlich alles andere, aber nicht primär
haute-cuisine angesagt. Ergo: Ingwer (getrocknet!!; kenn' ich auch schon
seit Kindheit) scheint in Norddeutschland schon eine längere Zeit recht
verbreitet; vermutlich ein Resultat der Hanse.



Aber "Ingwer", nicht "e[ng]ver" oder "engvar" oder...! Man muss doch nicht
alles platt machen!!!



BTW: er gab mir einen zusätzlichen Tipp. Mit salpetrigem Wasser, wie wir es
bis in die 60er Jahre des 20. eeuws nahezu ausschließlich hatten, schmecke
die Erbsensuppe einfach besser *g*!
