Dear Lowlanners,

thanks to all of you (in special our A*p*palachian friends) for your help in
my research ref. *_hollern_*. I didn't succed yet, but made a little
progress: meanwhile I found *_verhollern_* and a noun *_Hollern_* (but this
just might be the name of a village near by) in an old, special dictionary
for German rhymes - owned by the University of Oxford and digitalised by
GOGGLE himself. But sorry for me - without any further explanation :-(.
But this could be a proof that it doesn't just exist in my dreams, and
thus I'll have to keep on searching!!

Allerbest!

Jonny Meibohm

PS: next time I will have to thank you in 'award', not in 'advantage' ;-)!

Beste Lowlanders,

In het West-Vlaams zeggen we voor 'Hij is verdwenen' 'j'is verzwon' ( op
zijn Nederlands: hij is verzwonden).

Verdwijnen = verzwinden (archaïsch litteraire taal en gewestelijk geworden).

Het woordenboek van de Nederlandse taal legt het als volgt uit:

VERZWINDEN

Woordsoort: ww.(trans.,intr.,st.)

Modern lemma: verzwinden

bedr. en onz. st. ww. Van zwinden met ver- (V). Mnl. verswinden. Ook wel als
german. beschouwd (b.v. BEETS, Versch. 1, 26 [1857]), maar niet alg. als
zoodanig aanvaard (b.v. Taalg. 1862, 225).

1. (Onz.) Wegkwijnen, verwelken; (oneig.) afnemen, verminderen in kracht,
hevigheid, grootte, intensiteit. Sinds lang veroud.

2. (Onz., bedr.) Van concr. en abstr. zaken, bij verg. ook van pers.:
(doen) ophouden te bestaan, te niet (doen) gaan; te niet gedaan worden; een
einde (doen) nemen; en in daarbij aansl. gebruik.

3. (Onz.) Aan het oog onttrokken worden, onzichtbaar worden, (voor het oog)
verdwijnen, door verwijdering of vertrek, verlies van de uiterlijk
waarneembare gedaante of door verberging, bedekking of omhulling. In de
laatste toep. vaak in verb. met een voorz.-bep. ingeleid door in.

4. (Onz.) Zich verwijderen, heengaan, weggaan, wegtrekken.

groetjes

luc Vanbrabant

Oekene

re: Reinhard wrote: Low Saxon has *verswinnen*, *swinnen* and some dialects

Hello Heather and Ron:. Verdwijnen from dwinnen,,, OK but how about the
English to dim the lights, Dutch "dimmen" ?

And yes Heather, the particle "ver-" in front of a verb often means "
utterly/total like slapen - verslapen is to sleep-to oversleep and vallen –
vervallen is to fall – to dilapidate (if that could be a verb in English)
but kopen is to buy, verkopen is to sell.

Greetings, Jacqueline

PS. Heather, Don't you love those moles. A couple brought me back a small
silver teaspoon that my kids had taken outside to play some thirty five
years ago! For that I forgive them a couple of moles heaps. J.

PS!! RON, I hope the antibiotics are starting to work by now. There is
nothing as bad as an itch that you can't scratch. Houd je taai! J.
