I wonder if this would mean that Scottish "Swanson"s could be descended
from Swedes who wrote their name in the older spelling so that the Scots
simply pronounced it how they saw it?

Hoping I'm not just stating the obvious!

Sandy,

I once, quite some time ago, read that Swanson was derived from the Old
English man's name Swan ~ Swon, meaning 'swan'.

I used to think that it was a cognate of Scandinavian Sven (~ Swen ~ Svend <
Sveinn), but this one meant 'boy' or 'lad', related to English "swain(e)".
Apparently it began as "swine herder".
