Hei folks!

My father asked me about any possible relations between the Hindu
mythological snake (or something) Nacar/nakar, as he had just been in
Thailand, and words like Latin niger (black) and its offsprings, Romance
words like nacar (nacre), and ther Germanic nicker, nykr, and similar (water
"ghost").
I figured the nacre-group probably wouldn't be related as the english etym.
dictionary traces it back to Arabic, but the others could theoretically be
related as far as I know, by sound-laws. But I don't have the right books
here to find out if it makes any sense; I personally think he's just making
folk etymologies but I can't prove him right or wrong. To this nakar(nacar?)
snake-creature in Sanskrit, could possibly be related English snake with
s-mobile or so, but again I am on too thin ice to suppose anything really.

Anyone ideas on this?

PS thanks for the whole latkas-discussion! Last week, before I left home for
christmas this week I found a few potatoes I had to eat before leaving, so
inspired by the discussion here I decided to attempt some Rösti's for the
first time ever. They need some more refining and tweaks, but were pretty
okay and it was a great idea to try. More cheers!

Ha!, liebe Lowlanders, klasse, vielen Dank! Gast = Geest, das leuchtet mir
spontan ein! Die Erklärung für das slawische -gast hatte ich auch schon
gelesen und nur zur Kenntnis genommen, da ich keine slawische Sprache
beherrsche und da also kein Sprachgefühl "aus dem Bauch" antwortet. (Sehr
schade, ich wollte immer mal eine slawische Sprache lernen.) Aber bei
Gast/Geest kommt die volle Resonanz des großen "Ahaaa!", ein schönes Gefühl.
Upps, mir geraten hier die Metaphern außer Kontrolle :-)

Danke auch für das Link zu der Onomastik-Seite, lieber Wolfram, die kannte
ich noch nicht und habe sie gleich in meine Lesezeichen aufgenommen.

Was den Eekboom und seine Originalbreite angeht, der reckt doch vun
Pommern bet Nederland, nicht? Ist Wolgast nicht schon Pommern? Vorpommern
jedenfalls, und das nicht zu knapp?
Ist das Ostpreußische Niederdeutsch eigentlich richtiges Niederdeutsch? Kann
man die Breite des Eekbooms in Längengraden angeben? Ich könnte mir denken,
dass sie gerade auf der östlichen Seite öfters geschwankt hat, oder? Pommern
ist groß -- an welche Grenzen des Eekbooms hat Reuter zu seiner Zeit
gedacht?
