Subject: LL-L "History"

Beste Liëglanners,

Charles Gehring, director of the New Netherland Project at the New York
State library has been trying for 35 years to revive interest in the Dutch
roots of New York. So far, he already translated 7 200 pages of 17th century
Dutch texts. One of the journals that he translated, deals with the
adventures of a certain Harmen Meyndertsz van den Bogaert, probably an
ancestor of Humphrey Bogart.

Re the USA, Gehring says:

“What you find out is how deeply the Dutch cast roots here and how much of
their culture they transmitted to this country.”
