Hey roger, southern limburg along the language border indeed has kroezel
(both for black and red one), with a little bigger bump in the middle. More
or less the muncipalities Gingelom - Heers - Borgloon - Kortessem - Hoeselt
- Riemst and south.

Beste Roger & Diederik,

I don't know what the map says,

Neither do I...bit blurry. The big white blank in Western Brabant looks
strange. Still, thanks a bunch for the effort Diederik! Btw, "troskesbezen"
is also popular around here, but not as much as "zeebezen". Even though
indeed, 7 year olds won't use that last word anymore I guess ;=). Grootaers'
map may have been triggered by earlier research done by Bernhard Martin in
1928, and published in Teuthonista, German journal for dialectology.

but in my Lonerland South Limburgish the names were:
*- zwatte kroezele*
 *- roi kroezele*

I have a feeling *kroezele* comes from the French *groseilles*

Yep. "Groseille" in turn is said to be a derivation from "Kräuselbeere",
"Krausbeere", which is cognate with "kruisbes". This "kruis" = "kroes", as
in "kroeshaar" (gekruld haar). Some berries had tiny, curly hairs on them,
hence the name...semantic shift though, as happens oft with biological
names, where taxonomy hasn't always been as strict as it is now.

Kind greetings,

Luc Hellinckx, Halle
