A very interesting article titled "Political complexity predicts the
spread of ethnolinguistic groups" has recently been published by the US
National Academy of Sciences. Dutch newspaper NRC summarizes it:

Striking to see how the length of the growing season correlates positively
with the expansion of a language, whereas difference in altitude promotes
isolation.
