Well, I am not sure whether "hulled barley" SHOULD be with or without the
hulls, but if we go with the "without" reading" then maybe I am part of the
"monied / moneyed" class!?

and speaking of "without", the standard Scottish English meaning of "without
= not in (= outside of)" has GOT to be one of my favourites: and, I myself
have been living WITHOUT America for over 20 years (without withdrawal
symptoms of any kind)!

Ah, birds may be winged creatures, but a winged bird could be a bird that’s
had its wings clipped so it can’t fly away.

>From Merriam-Webster, one of the definitions of the verb “to wing”:

4 a*:* to wound in the wing *:* disable the wing of <*winged* the
duck> b*:*to wound (as with a bullet) without killing
<*winged* by a sniper>

But you’re right, I would expect hulled barley to have had the hulls
removed. I would expect barley with the hulls intact to be labeled something
like “whole barley.”

Yeah, Kevin! "Whole barley"! That's it, analogous to "whole wheat".

Hmm ... Are we dealing with two kinds of "winged" perhaps, one with the "e"
pronounced in the archaic manner? ;-)
