Hey Ingmar & völker,

I did not really follow the thread about »ask, eischen etc.«, but perhaps it
can bring some idea, that in Westphalian Saxon at the time of Klöntrup
(1820) there was in use a pair of similar meaning words:

eesken (eysken) & wreesken (wreysken) - ()=>Algemeyn LL-schriifwiis

e. g. »man häwt van em niks eesket odder wreesket«
= de: er ist verschollen / en: he has gone lost/missing

One by one after Klöntrup's Low German-Westphalian Dictionary:

»eesken: 1. erforschen. 2. erfahren. 3) fragen. 4. begehren, fordern.«

       en:     = 1. to explore/researche/study sth. 2. to
experience/learn/find out sth. 3. to ask(!)/inquire. 4. to request/crave
sth.

»wreesken, also freesken: erforschen, ausfindig machen.«

       en:     = to explore/researche/study sth., to descry/detect/find/spy
out sth.

Ik wünske di/ju wiiderhen erfolg bi'n etymologisken wreysken achter
»eysken/eischen/ask«!

Goutgaun!
