Liebe Freunde,

die Kalendermacher haben es einfach. Pfingsten ist immer der 50. Tag
nach Ostern. Denn Pfingsten kommt von "pentekoste" - das ist griechisch und
heißt: der fünfzigste.

Erst wenn sich der Laubwald voll begrünt hat, etwa zu Pfingsten, kehrt der
Pirol in sein Brutrevier zurück.
Man nennt ihn Pingstvagel, Vagel Bülow, Schult von Bülow.

De Vagel Bülow röppt ümmer: *"Schult von Bülow, kumm mit nah Mirow!"*  Sien
Wiew antert denn: *"To Maark, to Maark!"*

Merkwürdig nur, welche Rolle der *Pingstmaandag *im Niederdeutschen spielt.
Denn er ist so eine Art Sankt Nimmerleinstag! Wenn euch also jemand sagt,
daß er das Geld am Pingstmaandag zurückzahlen will, dann habt ihr es mit
einem Schurken zu tun,
Denn: *Pingstmaandag - das ist, - wenn de Gäus up'n Ies danzen!*

Looking ahead toward the coming weekend, Hanne talks about the Christian
holiday of Pentecost, or Whitsun.

In particular she talks about the Low Saxon folk tradition of connecting
this holiday (*Pinksten*) with the golden oriole (*Oriolus oriolus*). It's
Low Saxon names are *Pingstvagel *("Whitsun bird"), *Vagel Bülow*, *Schult
von Bülow*, and I will add here *Wewolk* or *Wewulk*. Apparently this is so
because the bird returns to the woods when they have turned fully green.
Whitsuntide is traditionally considered the begin of the warm season and
growing season, and people decorate their houses with fresh green twigs and
flowers.

Citing material from her own collection, Hanne explains that in
Low-Saxon-speaking areas Pentecost Monday tends to be referred as a
non-existing day, although it does exist. If someone promises you something
for Pentecost Monday it's likely to be an empty promise.
