 Subject: Language varieties

Dear Lowlanders,

As many of you probably know, the actress Charlize Theron was born and
raised in South Africa. What some of you may not know is that she speaks
Afrikaans. Some media people have begun to tap this resource, and Charlize,
who is a famous Hollywood personage now, has the potential of being a bit of
an ambassador for the Afrikaans language.

Here is a video clip of an interview with Charlize in Belgium in which the
Interviewer speaks Belgian Dutch and wants Charlize to speak Afrikaans after
she tried a sentence in Dutch and then speaks English. Once they find their
groves, they have a fluent bilingual conversation. Mutual comprehension is
probably aided by the average person's long-time exposure to each other's
language (much like what happens among Danes, Norwegian and Swedes):

Here is a Dutch report about lexical creativity of Afrikaans:

And here, on the funnier side of things, are video clips in which Ellen
Degeneris shows an interest in both Afrikaans and Dutch while interviewing
Charlize Theron and Famke Janssen (the latter of whose name sounds Frisian
to me):

Enjoy!

Happy Whitsuntide an d Shavu`ot!
